Boston was tied for 13th in the regular season in turnover rate, coughing it up on 13.9 percent of its possessions.

This was a problem for the Celtics all series long. Once again, they just handed the ball to the Warriors time after time. With their season and championship dreams on the line, the Celtics couldn’t stop themselves from turning the ball over. The final tally: Wiggins outscored Tatum 18-13 in the championship closeout game. Wiggins’ maturation as a defender helped lead to him being an NBA champion for the first time. And against Tatum, he never fell asleep off the ball and tried to stay in his jersey when Tatum had the ball. In the Warriors’ system, he was presented with accountability and was forced to grow up and mature as a player. Eventually, his much-questioned motor felt like it had stalled forever. Off the ball, he’d often look narcoleptic. The Wiggins we saw in Minnesota showed flashes of defensive prowess on the ball, but he had so many lapses in awareness and attention to detail. This wasn’t the Wiggins we saw in Minnesota. Wiggins was all over Tatum, and the Celtics never really worked hard to force switches to get Wiggins off their star.

Wiggins did his homework in this series and knew exactly how to eliminate space from Tatum inside the arc. Tatum had a rough go of it and was held scoreless for most of the second half.
